Question authority
Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself.

Thinking for yourself works well providing you have accurate information regarding the situation your are forced to make a decision about. Otherwise I suggest using your gut instinct...it usually proves right in the long run.

I believe the passage is trying to inform the reader to not follow the herd. To think for one's self, not to believe or endorse something someone else believes in just to be accepted or to assume it is correct because someone with power says that it is. Throughout our lives we have been taught to believe certain things and after hearing them over and over they become etched in our minds. For example, all of our lives we have been taught that Pluto was a planet, then out of nowhere we are told it isn't? Who decides these things? The authorities? The scientists? It's like we live and accept their view of reality, and except the reality in which they present. Make your own judgments, think for yourself, think outside the box.
